I sure can get more "fresh" and "exciting" ideas when I am taking my shower first thing in the morning.
It never ceases to amaze me the blog topics I can think of, the travels I could take, the fun things I could do, or ways I can get more organized and on top of things. So it's always fun to jump out of the shower, get dressed, and then begin what I hope is a productive day.
Today I came up with a real genius of an idea. But I'm not ready to share it yet. I don't even want to give any hints -- but soon time will tell. (by the way I am not pregnant).
And I really need to go, because I just took a shower, got dressed, and am trying to begin what I hope is a productive day.

Blindsided
Well now that I've had at least 24 hours to digest yesterday's news, I am finally able to describe some of the feelings I am experiencing. I want to write them down now while they are still fresh in my mind.
Just a little background so you'll understand this post. My brother and I were adopted by my step-father when I was around 7 years old. At the time my biological father severed his parental rights and we never heard from him again. He only contacted me 1 time in 1977 and that was it. I found out about 10 years ago that he had passed away in 1998.
Yesterday's phone call to my mother from an attorney looking for me and my brother regarding the estate of a grandmother who recently passed and a long lost half sister looking for us -- I must admit really was a BIG surprise.
First of all, it looks like I might finally find some of the answers that I have been looking for now for about 10 years.
I guess the strangest part to me in all of this is the surreal feeling of having potentially another group of siblings. Do they want to meet us? Do they know about us? What can they tell us about what has happened the last 50 years?
It feels strange that I now feel somewhat detached from my REAL family -- like I have something going on that they are not a part of -- but yet they should be because they are my family.
It's hard to put all of this into words, mainly because I never expected to ever hear from that part of my old life. I figured that everyone had moved on just like we had and had their own lives to live.
But now, out of the blue, one phone call is changing all of that.
Where will it lead?
What is going to happen from here?
I don't have the answers, but I have to admit that it really has taken me by huge surprise! Another huge surprise was to find out that we had a grandmother who was still alive. Did she think about us? Did she want a relationship with us?
One thing I know for sure.....this is going to be an interesting journey.

One of the things on my wish list
I wish I had daughter-in-laws and grandchildren.
In that order preferably.
I love all my little "adopted" grandchildren, but I really would like some to have around to hug, snuggle, and spoil.
It would also be nice to have a daughter-in-law. It's lonely sometimes being the only girl in my household and I never get to see girl movies or do girl stuff because there is no one to share it with.....just guys.
Although I do have to say that I was blessed with a husband who likes to shop -- sometimes even more than me. So it's nice in those RARE moments I want to do some shopping to have his company.
But ohhhhhhhhh how I would love to have some little Cris and Aaron's running around the house and making some noise in this old quiet house.

Remember when taking pictures was easy?
I finally sat down tonight and spent a little time tackling a BIG project: Photo Management.
I remember in the "good old days" you took a picture, took the film out, and dropped if off to be developed. It was a crap shoot on how your pictures were going to come out. There were no guarantees that they weren't blurry, dark, off center, or whatever -- you just dealt with them the way they came.
Now days....it's a whole project. Because now you can crop, adjust color, retouch, straighten, and do just about anything else you want to make that picture look perfect. So now it takes time to download the pictures on the computer and then spend all the time making them look perfect before printing.
Well my computer is FULL of pictures that I have downloaded and then left them sitting in folders.
Oh every now and then I use them for Facebook, blogging, or something else -- but now I am ready to print them up and stick them in my albums with all my other mementos. I'll have to take pictures some day of what I do with the pictures I take...lol.
But anyways....since I spent so much time on this one folder -- I thought I would post some pictures of our trip to Los Angeles last September.
P.S. One thing I do have to say about getting these pictures perfect is, you conjure up all the good memories of when the pictures were taken when you start working with them again!

"Ketchup" Day it is
Actually doing a little play on words today (thanks to my witty husband). It's really CATCH UP day.
Got the payroll done and all the "really important" stuff that needed to get done -- so now it's going around to all the small piles and trying to "catch up" some of the stuff that needs to get done.
So here's the list:
Finish laundry (towels)
Put away the clean and folded laundry
Clean the kitchen
Catch up paperwork - get everything entered....at least 2 weeks behind
Submit the new postcards for printing
Print out another 500 of our mailing to be ready to mail on Monday
Clean another small area of my old office
Pay two or three bills that need attention
Come up with some really yummy idea for dinner
Well that's enough for today, because this is probably more than a day's worth!
Happy Friday and Happy Ketchup Day!

I blinked
I blinked
..and suddenly my children were going to be 29 and 25 in August
..and suddenly I saw the graying temples on my husband
..and suddenly the family dog hobbles, can't see, and can't hear very well
..and suddenly the house needs paint, new flooring, and some general repairs
..and suddenly I have gained a few pounds
..and suddenly that young girl I remember looks in the mirror and sees a much older version of herself
..and then I see all the blessings in my life and am very grateful for all that I have and for all who love me

All that talking didn't drive us crazy
As I was loading the washer with yet another load of dirty clothes, I smiled and was thinking about our most recent travel adventure.
I am amazed that we drove all those miles and had so many things to talk about. We had brought a whole book full of CD's for those anticipated lags in conversation, but only listened for about 10 minutes the entire journey.
No instead of listening to music, we enjoyed the scenery around us and the company of each other. We liked to try and navigate our route on smaller highways so that the roads would take us through the little towns. The roads where you just barely get up to 65 and it's time to slow down to 55, to 45, to 35 and then stop for the red light in the tiny little downtown area.
Those are the roads that are so much more interesting. And as we drove those roads we talked about our business, we talked about our goals, we talked about other places we want to visit or places that we've already visited, we talked about the things we saw around us, we talked about which route we should take as we navigated the map when we didn't want to listen to Mavis (our GPS), we talked about our crazy ideas, but mostly we just talked. And it was great.
The whole car to ourselves and we had the freedom to go wherever we wanted (within reason -- we only had 4 days). No people to interrupt us or bother us -- just the moment to enjoy to ourselves.
So thank you Paul. It was a wonderful road trip and I think we felt very peaceful and relaxed the entire journey. I can't wait for the next one!

Last of the blast
Ok, part 3 of our mini-vacation brings us to waking up in Little Rock and hitting the sightseeing trails.
The decision was made to hit a Starbucks first (Paul's energy juice) and proceed to Central High School Museum.

Here we learned about the Little Rock 9 and how they were not allowed to attend school because of segregation laws (September, 1957). A very powerful museum with a powerful message. We were glad that we made that visit.

After that, it was time to head on to Hot Springs! We programmed Mavis (our GPS) for the most popular tourist attraction area in the city. After a little over an hour journey -- we made it to Central St., Hot Springs, Arkansas.

While there, we ate a nice Italian lunch and then off to see the sites. First stop was a public fountain to load up your own water vessels with the fresh hot spring water. I wanted some of this "magic" water in the hopes it would heal my hands.....but 173 degrees was just a little too hot to touch!

While there we would visit the Gangster Museum, where we learned all about the mobsters and their illegal gambling in the "good old days".

We walked along Central Ave and were amazed at the row of bath houses, most of which were very popular during the "mobster era". We were able to take a tour of one of the bath houses, the Fordyce.

Then we got to see first hand a REAL hot spring!

After a wonderful, but VERY HOT, day of enjoying Hot Springs....it was time to head off for Shreveport again!

After a four hour drive -- we made it back to Shreveport. After a night of gambling, a yummy prime rib buffet, and a VERY short night of sleep at Diamond Jacks.....it was time to head home to Houston!

We had a great time and a really amazing road trip!

Paul and Debbie's Excellent Adventure.....part 2
Day 2 begins in Hope, Arkansas......the birthplace of William Jefferson Clinton. Actually, he was born William Jefferson Blythe, but changed his name in high school....in case you didn't know that interesting little tidbit.
Here is the birthplace home of President Clinton in Hope. We tried to find the Visitor's Center and one of his other houses, but jeez.....in this tiny town that was still difficult. So enjoy this one because it's the only one we get to look at.

After touring the big town of Hope, it was off towards Little Rock. Lunch was spent about half way in between in Arkadelphia. There we enjoyed a delicous buffet lunch and FREE WI-FI!!! Yep, the main reason for the selection of this restaurant was the free wi-fi. We had to put the employee schedule on line so everyone would know when they had to work the next week.
On the way to Little Rock, Paul was put to the task of finding a hotel room for the night. Being the thrifty man that he is, he already had his discount coupon book in hand and found us a jacuzzi suite that was on sale with a Sunday night special! What a great find that was!
After checking into the hotel room, our next adventure was off to visit the Clinton Presidential Library. This visit marks the 6th library that we have visited....only 7 more to go! This library was nice, but definitely not in the top 3 of our individual favorites. We've become such library conossouirs that we are starting to rank the good, the bad, and the ugly of each library.

But once again, we learned lots of stuff and were glad that we got to visit! So after the library it was off to drive around Little Rock and see what we could find.

We found the State Capitol Building

Central High (location of the famous Little Rock 9)

After a brief analyzing of the trivia and pizza situation in Little Rock on a Sunday night, we found that there was no trivia -- but lots of pizza places to explore.
Our pick: Grady's. Our pizza of choice: Deb's Choice. Ironically, this was the pizza that I picked off the menu to try. The toppings: Olive Oil, Garlic Glaze, Turkey, Red Onions, Mushrooms, Jalapenos, Basil, and Steve's favorite blend of cheese (swiss and white american).

Wow! That was delicious!
The rest of our evening was spent back in the room watching TV and enjoying that jacuzzi tub.......but we'll end today's adventure here......lol

I must have Gypsy blood running through my veins
If you know me well.....you know it's no secret that we LOVE to travel.
Actually, if you don't know me very well and read ANYTHING that I post -- you'll know that we LOVE to travel.
We just don't like to stay in any one place for very long. We love to seek out new destinations and learn new things about other places. So somewhere back in my family tree there must be a gypsy or two.
Recently we were fortunate enough to "eek" out some time and take a mini-vacation (as we like to call them) and head to another new destination. This time it was a road trip to Little Rock, Arkansas.
Here are some pictures chronologically marking this adventure. Once again, my husband and I exceeded my expecatations of relaxation, fun, and learning. We had a great time and saw some interesting places and best of all spent so much quality time riding in the Mustang for 1062.5 miles on a 3 1/2 day adventure!
Day 1 - Leave Spring, Tx at 11:55 p.m. The car, the cooler, and the snack basket are loaded and we are ready to go. First stop is gasoline (can't get very far without that).
Lunch was spent at the Cotton Patch restaurant in Lufkin, TX. We have eaten there on a previous trip (I think the last time we went to Shreveport) and the food is country, plentiful, and best of all.....delicious! We had Chicken Fried Steak.....what else would you have at a Country Cafe in Texas?
After lunch -- we hop in the car. Our next destination is Shreveport, Lousiana to burn off some of that "gambling fever".
We make it to Shreveport at approximately 5pm and highlight the occasion with a Facebook clue of a sign of downtown Shreveport (right outside the casino) and a photo of Paul getting his shoes out of the casino's parking garage. P.S. We usually travel with our shoes off.

After several hours of playing and gambling we decide to head out on the highway and get closer to our next destination. It's midnight and we leave for Hope, Arkansas. 2.5 hours later we arrive in Hope and find a hotel that is still open and has a vacancy and we put this first day of traveling to bed.
Okay......next post will be our visit to Little Rock!

Paul and his mob connections
On our recent trip to Arkansas, I really learned some history about where my husband comes from.
He had previously mentioned that one of his Great Aunts had been married to a mobster who owned the Cotton Club.

Well I just kind of dismissed it because as long as his name wasn't Al Capone, Bugsy Malone, or Bonnie and Clyde......it didn't seem like that big of deal.
WELL.....was I wrong!
When we visited Hot Springs, Arkansas they had a Gangster Museum. Wow....that sounds interesting. We've never visited a ganster museum before.

Well holy cow did I learn some things. Apparently Paul's ex Great Uncle WAS somewhat of a bigger ganster than I originally thought. Mr. Owney Madden is very popular in the Hot Springs gangster history.

Mr. Madden was one of the first gangsters to inhabit Hot Springs and in fact, was the "head guy" that the gangsters had to "check in" with when they came to Hot Springs. We learned that Hot Springs was a neutral ground for all the mobsters and that this town has a rich history of illegal gambling and moonshine.
Well Mr. Owney Madden is so well known in Hot Springs, that he was one of the featured "rooms" in the Gangster Museum. We found out lots of interesting facts about him. So eager are we to learn about him, we are searching out books of this distant relative.
Apparently, Owney was married to Paul's great aunt early in his "career" and they divorced. So this is not someone that Paul had ever met or was even part of his family when he was born.

How fun it was to learn about the gangsters of the early 20's and to find out that we actually were related to one!

Photos we thought were lost forever
Well back in May we took a little business trip to San Antonio.
We also threw in a day of rest and relaxation at a friend's house in Canyon Lake.
The problem was we left our camera in the San Antonio hotel and didn't notice it until a couple of weeks later when we got ready to go to Tucson.
Couldn't find that darn camera anywhere, but after calling the hotel a month later......they had it!
So here are some of the photos on that camera that we thought were gone forever. Actually there were some on there that I wish were gone forever. Sorry though......you are NOT going to see those here.
Way out in the boonies we found this car for sale. Had to turn around and take a closer look because it was an almost exact replica of Paul's very FIRST car. He sure did spend a lot of time walking around this thing and having me take pictures of it.

This was our primary mode of transportation as we explored the property where we were staying. We had a blast with this thing!

And this was our primary reason for going to our friend's property. The peace, quiet, and getting away from it all. We loved it!

Our visit to the San Antonio Zoo. Funny.....this is the only picture we took. A picture of our business card at the Zoo sign!

I know.....I know.....you thought you were going to see some of the exciting pictures from our recent road trip. Well, keep coming back -- they will be here in a couple of days. I'm still trying to get caught up on a few things. But I will tell you that we had a GREAT time in Arkansas and saw lots of interesting things!
P.S. Notice the shortage of photos of myself. Well those are some of the ones that will never be published anywhere. That is one of the perks of owning the blog....I get to pick and choose what goes here....lol!

Just another day of the ordinary and the same
Just another one of those typical weekend days.
Paul is out working and I'm here trying ........hiss hiss hiss hiss gjbjdkgjekgjh

We're sorry to interrupt this blog to bring you an important announcement.

"This public service announcement is being seen because Paul and Debbie have stepped away from the computer. That's right.....they took off and are out somewhere on the planet enjoying themselves. There is no need for cause or concern at this time, as you will be notified of where they are by photos that will be posted on Facebook identifying their exact location. Thank you."
